Nobel Laureate for Artificial Radioactivity

Biography

Irène Joliot-Curie, daughter of Marie and Pierre Curie, shared the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with her husband Frédéric for their discovery of artificial radioactivity. She demonstrated that radioactive elements could be artificially produced, opening the door to nuclear medicine and advancing nuclear physics. Like her mother, she died from leukemia caused by prolonged radiation exposure. She also served in the French government as undersecretary of state for scientific research.
