Biography

Maryam Mirzakhani grew up in Tehran and won two gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad as a teenager. In 2014, she became the first woman — and the first Iranian — to receive the Fields Medal, mathematics' highest honor, for her groundbreaking work on the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces. She died of breast cancer at age 40, but her legacy continues to inspire mathematicians worldwide.
