The First Lady of Physics

“There is only one thing worse than coming home from the lab to a sink full of dirty dishes. And that is not going to the lab at all!”

— Widely attributed, from interviews

Biography

Chien-Shiung Wu conducted the famous Wu experiment in 1957, which proved that parity is not conserved in weak nuclear interactions — overturning a fundamental assumption of physics. While her male colleagues Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen-Ning Yang received the Nobel Prize for the theoretical prediction, Wu's experimental proof was excluded from the award. Known as the 'First Lady of Physics' and the 'Chinese Marie Curie,' she received the inaugural Wolf Prize in Physics and was honored with a U.S. postage stamp.
