Biography
Lise Meitner was an Austrian-Swedish physicist who provided the first theoretical explanation of nuclear fission. After fleeing Nazi Germany in 1938, she correctly interpreted the results of experiments by her longtime collaborator Otto Hahn, recognizing that the uranium nucleus had been split. Despite being nominated for the Nobel Prize 49 times, she was excluded from the 1944 Chemistry Nobel — a decision Einstein called 'unjust.' Element 109, meitnerium, is named in her honor.
