Led the Algorithm That Captured the First Black Hole Image
Biography
Katherine Louise Bouman is a computer scientist and electrical engineer who led the development of a computational imaging algorithm that made it possible to capture the first-ever image of a black hole. As part of the Event Horizon Telescope project, she developed the CHIRP algorithm (Continuous High-resolution Image Reconstruction using Patch priors) to combine data from radio telescopes around the world. The resulting image of the black hole at the center of galaxy M87, released on April 10, 2019, was hailed as a landmark achievement. She is currently an assistant professor at Caltech.
