Dame Wendy Hall is a British computer scientist who pioneered work in multimedia and hypermedia. In the late 1980s, her Microcosm system at the University of Southampton explored open hypermedia linking — ideas that predated and paralleled the development of the World Wide Web. She co-founded the Web Science Research Initiative with Tim Berners-Lee, establishing Web Science as an interdisciplinary academic field. She has served as President of the ACM, the first person outside North America to hold the position, and was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
