Julia Robinson
Key Solver of Hilbert's Tenth Problem
Biography
Julia Robinson made fundamental contributions to the solution of Hilbert's tenth problem, which asked whether there exists an algorithm to determine if a Diophantine equation has integer solutions. Her work, combined with that of Martin Davis, Hilary Putnam, and Yuri Matiyasevich, proved that no such algorithm exists. In 1976, she became the first woman elected to the mathematics section of the National Academy of Sciences, and in 1983, she became the first woman president of the American Mathematical Society.
