Classified Nearly 400,000 Stars

Biography

Annie Jump Cannon developed the Harvard spectral classification system (OBAFGKM) still used by astronomers today to classify stars by temperature. She manually classified nearly 400,000 stars — more than any other person in history — earning her the nickname 'Census Taker of the Sky.' Nearly deaf from childhood, she was one of the famous 'Harvard Computers' and became the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate from Oxford University.
