Williamina Fleming

Biography

Williamina Fleming was hired as a maid by astronomer Edward Pickering, who reportedly said his maid could do a better job than his male assistants. He was right. She became one of the first 'Harvard Computers' and developed a system for classifying stars by their spectra. She discovered the Horsehead Nebula, catalogued over 10,000 stars, and identified 59 gaseous nebulae, 310 variable stars, and 10 novae.
