Ada Yonath
Nobel Laureate for Ribosome Structure
Biography
Ada Yonath is an Israeli crystallographer who pioneered the study of ribosome structure using X-ray crystallography. She was the first scientist to successfully crystallize ribosomes, a feat once thought impossible, and spent over two decades mapping their atomic structure. Her work was foundational for understanding how antibiotics target bacterial ribosomes, opening new paths for drug development. She received the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, becoming the first Israeli woman to win a Nobel Prize and the first woman in 45 years to win the Chemistry Nobel.
