Pioneer of Surface Science from Her Kitchen Sink

Biography

Agnes Pockels conducted groundbreaking experiments on surface tension from her kitchen sink, having been denied university education as a woman in 19th-century Germany. She invented the slide trough, the precursor to the Langmuir-Blodgett trough that became essential to surface chemistry research. Unable to publish through traditional channels, she sent her findings to Lord Rayleigh, who was so impressed that he arranged for their publication in Nature in 1891. Her self-taught discoveries laid the foundation for modern surface science.
