Clara Immerwahr
克拉拉·伊默瓦尔
First Woman PhD in Chemistry from Breslau
Biography
Clara Immerwahr became the first woman to earn a PhD in chemistry from the University of Breslau in 1900, a remarkable achievement for that era. She married Fritz Haber, who would go on to develop chemical weapons for the German military. Immerwahr was a vocal opponent of chemical weapons research, viewing it as a perversion of science. After the first deployment of chlorine gas at the Second Battle of Ypres in April 1915, she took her own life in protest — a tragic act that has made her a symbol of the ethical responsibilities of scientists.
