Mapped the Ocean Floor

Biography

Marie Tharp created the first comprehensive map of the ocean floor, revealing the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and providing crucial evidence for the theory of plate tectonics and continental drift. Banned from research ships because she was a woman, she worked from shore analyzing sonar data. When she first identified the rift valley, her colleague Bruce Heezen dismissed her findings as 'girl talk.' Her maps fundamentally changed our understanding of Earth's geology.
