Biography
Bessie Coleman became the first African-American woman — and the first Native American — to hold a pilot's license. Denied admission to flight schools in the United States because of her race and gender, she learned French and traveled to France to earn her license in 1921. She became a celebrated barnstormer and refused to perform at venues that would not admit African Americans. She died in a plane crash at 34 while preparing for an aerial show.
