Martha Coston
玛莎·科斯顿
Inventor of the Coston Signal Flare
Biography
Martha Coston developed the Coston flare, a system of colored signal flares that was adopted by the U.S. Navy for maritime communication. After discovering her late husband's unfinished notes for a pyrotechnic night signal, she spent ten years researching, experimenting, and collaborating with chemists and pyrotechnicians to create a practical system. She received a patent in 1859, and her flares were widely used during the Civil War and by navies worldwide. Her autobiography "A Signal Success" documented the significant obstacles women faced as inventors in the 19th century.
