Mary Anderson invented the first practical windshield wiper in 1903 after observing a streetcar driver struggling to see through sleet in New York City. She received a patent for her 'window cleaning device' — a spring-loaded arm with a rubber blade that could be operated from inside the vehicle. Though manufacturers initially showed no interest, her invention became standard equipment on all American cars by 1916.
