Nobel Laureate in Laser Physics
“We need to celebrate women physicists because they're out there.”
“我们需要赞美女性物理学家,因为她们就在那里。”
— Nobel Prize press conference, 2018
Biography
Donna Strickland shared the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics for developing chirped pulse amplification (CPA), a technique that generates ultrashort, high-intensity laser pulses now used in millions of corrective eye surgeries annually. She was only the third woman in history to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics. At the time of her award, she was an associate professor — she did not yet have a Wikipedia page, highlighting the persistent invisibility of women in science.
