Maria Goeppert Mayer
玛丽亚·格佩特-梅耶
Nobel Laureate for Nuclear Shell Model
Biography
Maria Goeppert Mayer was a theoretical physicist who proposed the nuclear shell model of the atomic nucleus, for which she received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963 — only the second woman to do so after Marie Curie. For much of her career, anti-nepotism rules prevented her from holding paid positions at universities where her husband worked, forcing her to pursue research as a volunteer or in unpaid positions.
