Translated Newton's Principia into French

Biography

Émilie du Châtelet was a French natural philosopher and mathematician who made Newton's work accessible to the European continent. Her translation and commentary on Newton's Principia Mathematica, published posthumously, remains the standard French translation to this day. She also proposed that kinetic energy is proportional to the square of velocity — a concept later confirmed and foundational to modern physics. She died at 42 from complications of childbirth, days after completing her translation.
