Discoverer of Pulsars

Biography

As a graduate student in 1967, Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovered pulsars — rapidly rotating neutron stars that emit regular pulses of radio waves. The 1974 Nobel Prize for this discovery was controversially awarded to her supervisor Antony Hewish and Martin Ryle, excluding Bell Burnell. Despite this injustice, she has had an extraordinary career in astrophysics and donated the entire £2.3 million from her 2018 Breakthrough Prize to fund scholarships for underrepresented physics students.
