The Physicist Who Slowed and Stopped Light
Biography
Lene Hau achieved what was once thought impossible — slowing light to just 17 meters per second in 1999 using a Bose-Einstein condensate, and then stopping it entirely in 2001. Her groundbreaking experiments at Harvard University fundamentally altered our understanding of the nature of light and opened new possibilities for quantum computing and information processing. As the Mallinckrodt Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at Harvard, she continues to push the boundaries of atomic physics and optics.
