The Queen of Carbon Science
Biography
Mildred Dresselhaus, known as the 'Queen of Carbon Science,' was an MIT physicist whose research on carbon nanostructures laid the groundwork for the field of nanotechnology. Her work on graphite, carbon nanotubes, and thermoelectric materials helped make possible technologies from lightweight composites to energy-harvesting devices. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and was the first woman to win the National Medal of Science in Engineering.
