Myriam Sarachik
米里亚姆·萨拉奇克
Condensed Matter Pioneer and APS President
Biography
Myriam Sarachik was a distinguished condensed matter physicist at City College of New York whose career spanned six decades of groundbreaking research. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, she fled the Nazis as a child, eventually reaching the United States as a refugee. She provided the first experimental confirmation of the Kondo effect and became a pioneer in the study of quantum tunneling of magnetization in molecular magnets. As president of the American Physical Society in 2003, she was a powerful advocate for diversity in physics. She received the National Medal of Science and the APS Medal for Exceptional Achievement.
