Biography

Carolyn Shoemaker discovered 32 comets and over 800 asteroids, more comets than any other living person at the time. She co-discovered Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which spectacularly crashed into Jupiter in 1994 — the first directly observed collision of two solar system objects. She began her career in astronomy at age 51, proving it is never too late to make world-changing discoveries.
