Explained How Elements Are Forged in Stars

Biography

Margaret Burbidge co-authored the landmark B²FH paper in 1957, which explained how chemical elements are synthesized inside stars through nuclear reactions — one of the most important papers in astrophysics. She became the first woman director of the Royal Greenwich Observatory and famously refused the Annie Jump Cannon Award because it was restricted to women, arguing against gender-segregated prizes. A tireless advocate for equality, she continued observing and publishing research well into her nineties.
