Paris Pişmiş

Biography

Paris Pişmiş was the first professional astronomer in Mexico. Born in Istanbul to Armenian parents, she earned her PhD from Istanbul University and moved to Mexico in 1942, where she founded the astrophysics program at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Over her career, she discovered 20 open clusters and 3 globular clusters, and trained generations of Mexican astronomers who went on to build Mexico's modern astronomical research infrastructure.
