Ruby Payne-Scott

Biography

Ruby Payne-Scott was a pioneer of radio astronomy, the first woman radio astronomer in Australia and one of the first in the world. She discovered Type I and Type III solar radio bursts, making fundamental contributions to our understanding of solar activity. She was forced to resign from CSIRO when her marriage was discovered, as married women were barred from holding permanent positions — a policy she had secretly defied for years to continue her research.
