Timnit Gebru

Biography

Timnit Gebru is a computer scientist and advocate for ethical AI who co-founded Black in AI, a community of Black researchers in artificial intelligence. Her research highlighted the social and environmental costs of large language models and the disproportionate harm AI systems can cause to marginalized communities. She founded the Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR) to conduct independent, community-rooted AI research.
