Florence Bascom

Biography

Florence Bascom was a pioneer of American geology and the second woman to earn a PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1893. She became the first woman hired by the U.S. Geological Survey and the first woman to present a paper at the Geological Society of Washington. At Bryn Mawr College, she built a renowned geology department and trained many of the next generation of female geologists, earning her the title 'the mother of American women geologists.'
