Pioneer Volcanologist

Biography

Katia Krafft was a French volcanologist who, together with her husband Maurice, documented volcanic eruptions around the world with extraordinary courage and scientific rigor. Their footage and photographs of eruptions from dangerously close range have been invaluable for volcanology and public safety. Their film of pyroclastic flows directly influenced evacuation procedures that saved tens of thousands of lives during the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption. Tragically, both Kraffts died in a pyroclastic flow at Mount Unzen, Japan, in 1991.
