Pioneer of Ocean Geochemistry

Biography

Katsuko Saruhashi was a pioneering Japanese geochemist who developed the first method to accurately measure carbon dioxide levels in seawater. Her research traced radioactive fallout from nuclear weapons tests across the Pacific Ocean, providing crucial scientific evidence that supported nuclear test ban treaties. She was the first woman elected to the Science Council of Japan. To encourage women in science, she established the Saruhashi Prize, Japan's most prestigious award for women scientists.
