Explained the Antarctic Ozone Hole

Biography

Susan Solomon is an atmospheric chemist who provided the first explanation for the cause of the Antarctic ozone hole, demonstrating that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) reacting on polar stratospheric clouds were responsible. Her 1986 expedition to Antarctica and subsequent research were instrumental in shaping the Montreal Protocol, the landmark international treaty that phased out ozone-depleting substances. She is a professor at MIT, co-chaired the IPCC Working Group I, and received the National Medal of Science.
