Discovered Bacterial Quorum Sensing
Biography
Bonnie Bassler is a molecular biologist who discovered that bacteria communicate through chemical signaling molecules in a process called quorum sensing. Her research revealed that bacteria coordinate group behaviors — including virulence, biofilm formation, and antibiotic resistance — by detecting the density of their population through these chemical signals. This work has opened entirely new approaches to developing antibiotics. She is a MacArthur Fellow, Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, and professor at Princeton University.
