Nobel Laureate Who Discovered Telomerase
Biography
Elizabeth Blackburn is a molecular biologist who discovered the molecular nature of telomeres — the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes — and co-discovered telomerase, the enzyme that replenishes them. This work revealed fundamental mechanisms of aging and cancer. She shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Carol Greider and Jack Szostak. Her research has opened vast new fields in aging biology, cancer research, and stress physiology. She served as President of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.
