Proved Chromosomal Translocations Cause Cancer
Biography
Janet Rowley was a geneticist who discovered in 1972 that chromosomal translocations — where pieces of chromosomes swap places — can cause cancer, fundamentally changing our understanding of cancer genetics. She identified the specific translocation in the Philadelphia chromosome responsible for chronic myelogenous leukemia. Her work led directly to the development of imatinib (Gleevec), one of the first targeted cancer therapies. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 for her transformative contributions to medicine.
