Pioneer in Bacterial Insulin Gene Cloning
Biography
Lydia Villa-Komaroff is a Mexican-American molecular biologist who was part of the team that first demonstrated bacteria could be engineered to produce insulin in 1978, paving the way for mass production of synthetic insulin for diabetes treatment. She was one of the first Mexican-American women to earn a PhD in science. As a co-founder of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), she has been a tireless advocate for diversity in STEM fields.
