Led Discovery of the Huntington's Disease Gene
Biography
Nancy Wexler is a neuropsychologist who led the international effort to locate the gene responsible for Huntington's disease. Her groundbreaking research with a large Venezuelan kindred near Lake Maracaibo was crucial to mapping the gene to chromosome 4 in 1983 and ultimately identifying it in 1993. Her quest was deeply personal — her own mother died of Huntington's disease. As president of the Hereditary Disease Foundation, she has dedicated her career to understanding and combating hereditary diseases.
