Discovered Non-Chromosomal Genes
Biography
Ruth Sager was a geneticist who discovered non-chromosomal (cytoplasmic) genes in the alga Chlamydomonas, proving that hereditary material exists outside the cell nucleus in organelles such as chloroplasts. This challenged the prevailing view that all genes reside on chromosomes. Later in her career at Harvard, she pivoted to cancer genetics and made significant contributions to identifying tumor suppressor genes, advancing the understanding of how cells become cancerous.
