Yuan Chang

Biography

Yuan Chang is a virologist at the University of Pittsburgh who, together with Patrick Moore, discovered Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV/HHV-8) in 1994. This discovery identified the cause of Kaposi's sarcoma, a cancer commonly associated with AIDS. Using representational difference analysis, a novel molecular technique at the time, they isolated viral DNA sequences unique to the tumor. Her work has had a major impact on understanding virus-associated cancers.
