Biography

Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States in 1849, graduating first in her class from Geneva Medical College. She faced enormous prejudice — her acceptance had been put to a student vote as a joke, but she persevered. She went on to found the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children and established a medical college for women, opening the door for generations of female physicians.
