Biography

Mary Anning was a fossil collector and self-taught paleontologist who made some of the most important finds in the history of geology. Working the treacherous cliffs of Lyme Regis, she discovered the first correctly identified ichthyosaur skeleton at age 12, and later found the first plesiosaur and the first pterosaur known outside Germany. Despite her extraordinary discoveries, as a working-class woman she was excluded from the scientific societies that studied her finds.
