Britain's First Female Physician

Biography

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was the first woman to qualify as a physician and surgeon in Britain. Rejected by every medical school, she qualified through the Society of Apothecaries, which then changed its rules to prevent other women from following. She co-founded the London School of Medicine for Women and became the first female mayor in England. Her persistence paved the way for women in British medicine.
