Nobel Laureate for Discovering Olfactory Receptors

Biography

Linda Buck shared the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her discoveries of odorant receptors and the organization of the olfactory system. She identified approximately 1,000 different olfactory receptor genes, revealing how humans can detect and distinguish about 10,000 different odors. Her work opened entirely new areas of neuroscience research.
