Biography

Virginia Apgar developed the Apgar Score in 1952, a simple and rapid method to assess the health of newborn babies immediately after birth. This five-criteria scoring system — Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration — has been used on virtually every baby born in a modern hospital and is credited with dramatically reducing infant mortality worldwide. She was also the first woman to become a full professor at Columbia University's medical school.
